H
ouse of Zion sees the need for emergency housing in our area as the number of the homeless increase.
There is a great need for temporary shelter and housing. Within a year House of Zion helps thousands of individuals that come through its door for shelter needs.

We receive calls at all hours of the day and night from people who need help, from all walks of life.

Many are looking for jobs within the area, but need a place to rest while looking for jobs. Others are traveling through the area with their families looking for work.

Harvest months are the most busiest. The shelter is always full of families or individuals who just need a night or two to rest until they find other more permanent  lodging. Our parking always has several families sleeping in their vehicles not wanting to leave what little possessions they might have.

The shelter consists of a small garage converted to a three bedroom quest house which sleeps 27 people, a    living room, small eating area and a full bath.

Meals are prepared in the House of Zion main house kitchen facility. They are then taken out to the shelter  area in the dining room facility section. Each person is given two on-site meals daily, consisting of a well balanced nutritional meal. At time of departure the person or family is given two warm blankets, and a food box to last then 10 days. Clothing is also always available to them.

It is our desire to help those who find themselves in a hard situation with very little resources available.

House of Zion is recognized by

the State of Oregon as the only Emergency Shelter

between Salem and Portland.

Battered Women and Children

House of Zion sees the same need that members of the community see. There is great need for help for victims of family violence. How many times have you seen a mother with her children in the emergency room at a local hospital or in the local police station trying to find a solution to the violence in the home.

Violence creates victims who in turn create more violence; but his can and must be stopped by early intervention. That is our goal at House of Zion, to stop a problem before it begins in the home. We do this by providing temporary assistance with lodging, food, clothing and blankets, transportation and referrals, pastoral counseling for the individual, and other needs God enables us to fulfill.

Many times we have received telephone calls from the local agencies as well as our local government about families experiencing emergency violence situations. Children have called seeking help because they were afraid to return home to the violence. Some were afraid for their own lives while others were afraid for their parents or siblings.

Because we are the only shelter in the area we have many young teenagers who come through our home from abused situations. House of Zion feels that it is up to us as part of this community to help these children before they become too bitter.

We also have many parents come to us for counseling in connection with their children experiencing drugs, alcohol, gang involvement, and violent behavior.

The House of Zion was stated in 1981 as a means in helping people to live more productive lives.

As a member of this community,

we feel it is important to have an

"Open Door" policy.

He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done.

Proverbs 19:17.

Five Reasons Why We Should Help

1. Its the right thing to do.

  • Just about every culture in the world knows that helping the needy is the right thing to do. It is also an American tradition.

  • Look at the need in NY today and look at the outpouring of love.

2. You feel good about helping.

  • To help the hungry really brightens our day and warms the heart.

  • It empowers you when you do something meaningful and lasting to help the homeless.

3. You make a permanent difference.

  • We do more than feed and shelter people.

  • We offer an atmosphere of genuine love.

  • That with the training in job skills, parenting, and personal skills - you can see how your gifts to the needy gets to the root problems of their poverty.

  • ESL, auto and diesel mechanics, culture awareness, computer, sign language, and cooking.

4. You improve your community.

  • A better life for one needy person or family makes a better life for someone.

  • The suffering of one hurts us all.

  • We see homeless children growing up in the crime scene, couple that with the feeling of worthlessness that often comes from being homeless.

  • We see many children at a young age harden their tender hearts. And we know that in a few years they will be in jail if not dead.

  • We are here to try and change things for them.

5. Your money works hard.

  • Our high level of efficiency is among the best today. When we give, believe me, it goes to help that man, woman or child.
